The best times to book your summer 2010 vacation.

If you want to go camping during the summer of 2010, or take any other type of vacation, like a cruise or all-inclusive resort, there are some things that you can do which will make your simmer vacation more rememberable and firmly reserved.  One of the best and least obvious things that you can do is to book early for any recreational activities you and your group (cult?) are interested in doing.

When the economy is in a downturn, many people can not afford to do the things that they really want to do in the summer months, and have to forego the family vacation in order to make the mortgage payments.  Booking when the economy is in bad shape is a great time, as the destination just may be desperate for business.

If there are vehicles to be rented, guides to be hired and/or reservations for accommodations to be made, making them as early as possible, preferably late Winter to early Spring, in order to take advantage of any early reservation bonuses like room upgrades or free meals   You may also have to book your reservations well in advance just to ensure that you get a spot, let alone the best spot available.

The best times to book a 2010 summer vacation are the times that the registration office starts taking reservations for the time period that your vacation is planned for.  For vehicle rentals, make sure to book at least 60 to 90 days in advance, to ensure that you get the vehicle that you want, or even the one that you need.  If there is a great RV for rent, and it is available for the time frame that your vacation falls into, you should book the reservation as soon as you have confirmation from your friends, family, coworkers or whomever is going with you on your vacation that they will indeed be going with you, and when.

Once you know how many people are to be involved in the summer vacation, you can start looking for accommodations that suit the group, like two or three camping sites that are together, as well as any rental vehicles.  Staying at the same campsite, but having to setup camp at three different areas of the campgrounds would be a major disappointment for all involved.  The same goes for hotel and motel rooms, as well as for cruise ships, where having three different types of cabins in three different parts of the ship would be more than unfortunate.  The earlier that you book your 2010 summer vacation, the more likely that you are to keep your group together.

The Grand Canyon, for instance, usually has it’s campsites fully reserved six months in advance.  For June 30th, 2010 arrival dates, you should contact the reservations office for the Grand Canyon campsites no later than January 30th, 2010.  The best times to book a 2010 summer vacation in a State, Provincial or Federal Park is the earliest date possible, since they always fill up within days of the registration opening up.

If you are booking reservations for inside another country, the best time to book a 2010 summer vacation would be when that country’s currency is at it’s lowest against your own dollar.  For North American tourists, the best time for Americans to book vacations in Canada would be when the Canadian Loonie is rated low against the American greenback.  The reverse would be best for Canadian travelers wanting to vacation in the US.

Make sure that you book your 2010 summer vacation before all of the spots for where you want to go are all booked up.  Having to look for, and settle for a second-best choice of where to go for your summer vacation in 2010 would be a disappointment for all involved, as the pre-booking excitement of anticipating the upcoming summer holidays would be ruined.  Unless, of course, you happen to get lucky and find an even better place to spend your summer holidays.

Travel safe.  Travel informed.

Peru Vacation Guide – Peru Travel With the Whole Family

No doubt about it, traveling with kids can be tough, but worry not: we are here to assure you that South America is indeed a family-friendly travel destination; all you need is a little research, creativity and a great packing list!

Let’s take Peru as an example: in a country as diverse and magical as this, options abound for activities that the whole family can participate in, enjoy and learn from. For starters there’s the massive variety of geography in Peru, which alone provides plenty of options for adventurous families in search of an unforgettable vacation experience.

Options range from a jungle experience deep in the tropical selva, to admiring the stunning blue ice giants of Huaraz, exploring the impressive ruins of Machu Picchu (a definite requirement) and swimming on the glorious beaches of southern Peru or white-sanded northern Máncora.

With just a little more research, plenty of kid (and adult) friendly activities can be found. To make traveling with kids extra easy, we’ve listed are a few unusual outings that’ll be memorable for the whole family.

Starting off where many a Peru vacation begins, Lima has more than a few distinctly Peruvian activities to offer family travelers. First on the route is the Lima Zoo, known by its more formal name of Parque de las Leyendas. Warning: the zoo isn’t up to the highest US standards but is a favorite of the locals and a great place to spend a few hours with the kids. Having undergone an extensive renovation of its animal pens, the park provides a variety of animals native to South America and beyond (giraffes and water buffalo included) as well as up close opportunities to even pet them!

La Marina, Block 24
Open 9am-5:30pm daily. Adults: US$ 3, children 3-11: US$ 1.30

Not far from Lima is another opportunity for up close wildlife experiences. At Pucusana Port, many families go on penguin and dolphin watching excursions. Located roughly 70 kilometers south of the capital, this is a small fishing town of only about 10,000 inhabitants. Life here remains much unchanged by recent developments in modern technology; the people still live off the ocean as they have for many generations past. Every morning, dolphins crowd to the port entrance and guided adventures can be arranged for children from a minimum age of five which will take you past the lazy sea lions sunning themselves on the hot rocks and occasionally flopping into the water for a fish snack.

If your goal is to provide a little eye-opening perspective for your kids, head south toward Lake Titicaca, and give your children the unforgettable opportunity to share for one day (or more) the lives of the indigenous communities who live on the lake’s floating reed islands or Uros. Residents of Uros and the nearby craggy terraced islands of Amantini and Taquile still speak Quechua (the language of the Inca empire) and are happy to share their way of living with you. Take a hike to the island summit of Amanatini’s Pachamama and Pachapa (Mother and Father Earth) temples or admire the precision of the centuries-old communal system Taquile Island; run entirely on a co-op system.

Boats and trips to Amantini, Uros and Taquile leave from Puno, on the Peruvian side of Lake Titicaca. Buses are 12 hours from Cusco.

Of course, a Peru vacation that bypasses Cusco and Machu Picchu would be absolutely inexcusable, especially when the goal of traveling abroad with kids is to open their minds to the world’s mysteries and treasures. While a trip on the train to Machu Picchu is a definite must-do, don’t forget that the remainder of the region offers a variety of other fun learning experiences as well. Visit the Inca ‘ceremonial fortress’ of Sacsayhuamán, located on a 3,000 hectare site just a mile from central Cuzco. This fortress offers a great landscape for exploring, climbing and fresh air fun-there’s even a few stone slides (rodaderos) and adventurous tunnel called the chinkana. Additionally, guided trips through the ruins on horseback can be arranged, as well as a special riverside picnic at the ‘holiday resort’ favored by Incan rulers-Tambomachay.

If in search of some quiet time to spend with the family, head up north to Máncora for a little peaceful R & R. Although there are cultural learning opportunities to be had here just as across all of Peru, the main draw card is opportunity to relax and enjoy the beach, and soaking up some sun. And if the desire for action manages to overcome the lazy beach atmosphere; try your hand at mastering surfing and body boarding the world class waves. Animal lovers can also visit the UNESCO protected Amotape Forest, where over 100 different species of mammals, birds and reptiles can be found in their natural habitat.

Finally, the idea of letting your children run wild through a jungle might not seem a great idea but at the Pilpintuwasi Butterfly Farm and Animal Orphanage located a short boat ride away from Peru’s jungle city of Iquitos, such an adventure is perfect for families.

Here, orphanage managers Gudrun Sperrer and Roblar Moreno have worked to expand the original facilities of the park to include an abandoned animal refuge. Children and parents can wander the grounds of this not-for-profit animal oasis, examining the hundreds of different butterflies as they glide through the air as well as play with a huge number of friendly monkeys, spotting enormous caiman in the lake, getting up close and personal with an orphaned jaguar and even pet fairy-tale worthy animals like a hulking tapir named Lolita and Rosa, the resident 8ft long anteater www.AmazonAnimalOrphanage.org

Our top tips for long plane and bus journeys with youngsters:

If at all possible, bring along a car seat for the plane or bus. This not only makes it safer for the child, but also cuts down on stress by putting them in a familiar and comfortable position.

Carry an extra change of clothes for yourself and baby: spills and dribbles happen!

Always have some snacks and drinks to hand. Non-perishable items like crackers and dried fruit are great keeping up the energy levels- especially when unfamiliar food is leaving your child hungry and cranky.
Only travel by night if necessary. Long, overnight bus rides can be rough on children as there is not much leg-room for comfort and few activities to keep them entertained. If there is no other way, make sure you request first floor seats on double-decker buses to avoid excessive bus swaying.

Keep up the interest levels in places like ruins and on city tours by getting your child their own disposable camera, that way they can create their own souvenirs of the journey and focus on points that really interest them.

Take along a notebook and a glue stick to create a vacation scrap book while you travel.

Safeguard your house when you vacation

When many of us go on vacation, we forget the most important things. These things can save us from thefts, or other things, which drain our wallets unnecessarily. Here is a quick guide to prepare for a vacation this year.

Have the newspaper stop its delivery of the paper. Nothing says hello louder to a common thief than newspapers gathering on the front porch. The thief sees a nice home that no one is in for a few days and you will be a target.

Ask the post office to hold you email at the post office. If your local office des not hold mail, forward it to a trusted family member for a few weeks.

If you have cable for you internet cancel the subscription at the cable company if you will be gone a month. This way you are saving the monthly fee, which is money that can be spent on the vacation.

If you do not want to cancel the internet connection, please turn off the modem. This will prevent people in your neighborhood from barrowing your connection

In small towns all across America, the police officers will watch your home while you are on vacation. Simply call up the station and let the officer know you are headed out of town and they will be alerted to any unusual occurrences at your home. Also, give them a phone number for in case of emergencies.

Let a trust neighbor know you will be out of town so they can watch your place, but do not stop there. Give that neighbor a phone number to reach you in case of an emergency.

Have a trusted family member go into your home and leave a light on or set up different lights with a timer. This creates the illusion of the home not being empty.

In addition, that family member can feed and water any pets left home during the vacation. Recently I got two cockatiels and I will not be taking them camping, so when one of my children come to feed and water them on a daily basis they can also leave a light on.

Turn the hot water heater down so that it is not going through the heating cycles when you are not in the home. Most all the hot water heaters built in the past ten years have a vacation setting.

Lock your windows along with your doors to prevent unwanted entry and unplug things such as the television, lamps, and any game systems you have within the home.

All of these ten tips will help to safeguard your home this summer when you go on vacation, so go ahead, and venture out into the big beautiful world there is no reason not too. Enjoy yourself knowing your home and all of your processions are safer.
